We had the best time working with the homeowners of this home in Charlotte to design the perfect landscape lighting plan for their amazing property. From the gorgeous pool and water feature to the extensive hardscaping and beautiful tropical trees, we were able to highlight the best features of their property with a custom, color changing landscape lighting system!
Outdoor Lighting Objectives
During the initial consultation, the clients wanted to add architectural lighting to the front of their home and landscape lighting to the backyard around the pool. While they didn’t initially request colored lighting, they became interested in the color changing options we presented at the design consultation.

To achieve the homeowners’ desired look, we installed a total of 25 low voltage LED lights throughout the property.
TRADITIONAL 2700K LANDSCAPE LIGHITNG
This backyard pool area was a DREAM to light! This panoramic shot perfectly illustrates how lighting can enhance your outdoor spaces and make them more usable and safe at night. Notice the accent lights on the trees, path lights on the stairs, and the water feature lighting. The layering of light sources creates beautiful visual interest and depth.
Accent Lighting Trees
Placing lights at the base of trees is a great way to create focal points throughout the property. We love how the lighting creates amazing ambiance without the pool lights but that it also works well when the pool is lit. Gorgeous!
COLORED LANDSCAPE LIGHTING
Colored lights aren’t just for Christmas! While landscape lighting is traditionally white, we love when clients are open to installing a color changing lighting system. With our colored systems, you still have the option of selecting the appropriate color temperature (usually 2700k-3000k) for a traditional look, but you also have the option of selecting from non-traditional colors like green, red, blue and etc. Some clients add colored lights to outdoor living areas for a unique, modern feel. Some add colored lighting to trees throughout their property or even mix the colored lights into the architectural lighting. With a quick adjustment from your phone, you could go from traditional white lights to red and green for a very merry Christmas. Or how about purple and orange for Halloween? Change the lights for a birthday party or support your favorite team on game day. The options are endless and SO much fun!
Water Feature Lighting
We chose to light this waterfall with accent lights placed on the opposite side of the pool to avoid visible light sources. Notice how changing the color of the waterfall lights to blue creates a different look in the second picture. One of the best features of our colored lighting systems is that they are zonable. This just means you can create zones with one or more lights so that you can change the color of each area separately.
Creating Ambiance with Colored Landscape Lighting
The color of landscape lighting you choose will dramatically affect the ambiance of the area being lit. Even a slight change from 2700K white to a slightly cooler 3000K white can change the look of your outdoor areas. (We suggest 2700K for a warm, inviting glow and 3000K for a more energetic, vibrant atmosphere.) Notice below, however, that the purple lights create a dramatically different feel in the area surrounding the pool. This choice screams poolside Halloween party!
